What are Thyroid Hormones?

doctor check for thyroid issue

The hormones are made by the thyroid gland.

The thyroid gland makes and releases two hormones, the thyroxine (T4) and the triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid hormones control the rate the body burns calories. An increased or decreased amount of thyroid hormone will directly affect the speed of your body’s mechanics.

Your Thyroid contributes to:

  • Metabolism rate
  • Heartbeat rate
  • Body’s temperature
  • Speed food moves through digestive tract
  • Muscle strength
  • Body replaces dying cells

*Do note, that your metabolism directly affects the gain or loss of body weight.

The thyroid gland works in conjunction of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland creates, stores TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). The release of the TSH by the pituitary gland causes the thyroid gland to realease it’s hormones (thyroxine & triiodothyronine). High levels of TSH increases the release of T3 & T4, and low amounts of TSH decreases the release of T3 & T4.
