What is Estrogen?

  • Estrogen is the primary female hormone. It is produced in the ovaries.

Estrogen builds up the uterine lining, stimulates breast tissue, and thickens vaginal wall. It is important for the menstrual and reproductive cycle.

  • It plays a critical role in bone building and has protective effects on the cardiovascular system.

Menopause brings major and permanent changes to hormone levels and balance of your body. Ovaries stop producing eggs and they quit producing hormones.

  • Symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, pain during intercourse, increased anxiety or irritability, and the need to urinate more often.

It is the drop in estrogen production and lack of estrogen that primarily brings on the discomforts and health concerns associated with menopause.

  • Fluctuating and falling estrogen levels disrupt your internal thermostat, causing vasomotor instability, also known as hot flashes. Your sleep cycles and muscle tone are affected by drastic reduction in estrogen levels.

Treatment of declining estrogen levels is hormone replacement therapy.
