What is DHEA ?

DHEA
  • DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is referred to as an “androgen”.
  • It is a precursor to male and female sex hormones including testosterone and estrogen.
  • These are the hormones that regulate fat and mineral metabolism, sexual and reproductive function, and energy levels.
  • DHEA levels increase until our mid to late 20’s then gradually start to decline.
  • Overwhelming fatigue is the most common symptom of low DHEA. Decrease in stamina and alertness is often observed in people afflicted with the shortage of this hormone.
  • Other symptoms include: depression, less muscle mass, pain in the joints, lower sex drive, dry skin and eyes, difficulty in losing weight, and poor memory
  • Potential health benefits of DHEA include:
    • Strengthening the immune system
    • Building up the adrenal gland
    • Slowing natural changes in the body that come with age
    • Providing more energy
    • Improving mood and memory
    • Building up muscle strength
  • Treatment of low DHEA levels is supplements or hormone replacement therapy.
